LEM is a serious neurological disease primarily found in horses, but it can also affect other species. It's characterized by the softening or malacia of the white matter (leukoencephalo) in the brain. This condition is typically caused by the ingestion of moldy corn infected with a toxin-producing fungus called Fusarium moniliforme. Symptoms can include behavioral changes, disorientation, blindness, and even death if not treated. It's a prime example of the potential dangers of mycotoxins, toxins produced by fungi.
