(Singular) Hypothalamus (n). Numerous brain areas are involved in the control of appetite. The hypothalamus plays a critical role, particularly the arcuate nucleus, paraventricular nucleus, lateral hypothalamus, ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus and the dorsomedial nucleus. The caudal brainstem also plays an important role in feeding, as it contains the motor neurones that function as the central pattern generator for the rhythmic and stereotyped movements of ingestion (e.g. mastication, licking, lapping).
