Hepatozoonosis is a tick-borne disease. Unlike in many other tick-borne infections, the dog is infected orally and not during the tick's blood meal. Infection takes place when the dog ingests a hepatozoon-carrying tick from its fur or from a prey animal that has ticks on its skin.
