The red liquid that is pumped by the heart around an animal’s body. Blood is formed of red and white corpuscles, platelets and plasma. It circulates round the body, going from the heart and lungs along arteries and returning to the heart through veins. As it moves round the body it takes oxygen to the tissues and removes waste material from them. Blood also carries hormones produced by glands to the various organs that need them.
